Eiffel bridge[edit]

The Eiffel Bridge is one of the main landmarks in Girona, along the Cathedral and the Onyar houses. It is officially called Pont de les Peixateries Velles ("the old fishmongers' bridge"), and locals also sometimes call it Pont de Ferro (Iron Bridge), but most call it the Pont Eiffel or the Eiffel Bridge. Its bright red colour and metal structure make it stand out from every other bridge in the city.
The bridge was built in 1876 by the company of Gustave Eiffel, the same engineer who later designed the Eiffel Tower in Paris.[1] At the time, using metal for bridges was modern and innovative, and the design reflected Girona’s move into a more industrial era. The construction project took almost two years and was completed in February 1877,
Other cities have Eiffel bridges, including Viana do Castelo in Portugal (which is big and green).

Pont de l’Alferez Huarte[edit]
Built in 1971. At Christmas, it has lights on it.
The first version of the bridge was built in between 1942 and 1945. However, the floods of 1970 revealed that the bridge was too low and obstructed the flow of the rushing waters, so it had to be rebuilt.
Pont de l’Areny[edit]
Bridge for both cars and people. Has a pedestrian crossing in the middle.
Pont de Tomas de Lorenzana[edit]
A footbridge connecting Eixample to Vista Alegre-Carme. Underneath it is a tiny concrete bridge that allows people walking in the canal to cross the river.
Pont de la font del Bou[edit]
Pont del Rei[edit]
This bridge has been closed for years. There are plans to rebuild it in 2026.

Demon's bridge[edit]
Yes, Girona has a bridge called Demon's Bridge (Pont del Dimoni). It's a bridge over the river Güell, one of Girona's four rivers.[2] it’s a pointless bridge because just a few metres away there’s like concrete paths and a roundabout that goes over the river.
There are different legends about how the bridge was created. One legend tells of a young woman who, on a stormy night, offered her soul to a demon in exchange for a bridge that would allow her to meet her lover. The demon agreed and promised to finish it in a single night. The girl watched horrified as the demon began building the bridge super-fast, like Flash or Superman. Then the girl had an idea. She grabbed a bucket of water and splashed it over a rooster, who woke up startled, and began to crow. When the demon heard the rooster crowing, he gave up on the bridge, because he thought dawn had arrived early.[3]
Another version says that an old woman summoned the devil and made a deal with him: he had to finish the bridge before midnight, and if he did, he could take the soul of whoever crossed it first. When the devil finished the bridge, the woman sent a dog across first.[3]
The truth is that, actually, no demons were involved in making this bridge. The bridge was built in 1357 to link Girona with Pla de Santa Eugènia de Ter[4], but was demolished in 1969. It was finally rebuilt in 2019.[2]
It is said a demon called Vicenç used to keep watch over the bridge.[2] The local citizens have honoured this legend by making Vicenç one of the two gegants (giants) of their neighbourhood, Santa Eugènia de Ter. [2]
