Ordering beer in Girona[edit]

Ordering “una cervesa, si us plau” (Catalan) or “una cervesa, por favor” (Spanish) will typically yield a canya.[1] A canya is a small draft beer (~200–300ml) costing around €2–2.50 depending on the bar.[1]

If multiple taps exist, specify a brand: “una canya de Heineken” or accept the default (usually Estrella Damm).[1]

You can also ask for una gerra (or pinta/medio litro) which is a 400–500+ml mug/pint, but this is not always available.[1]

To get a bottled beer, ordering by brand name alone (e.g., “una Estrella”) usually results in a bottle.[1] The bartender may ask “vols una copa?” (“do you want a glass?”)

Other drinks:

  • A clara is lager mixed with fizzy lemonade (similar to shandy).[1]
  • A non-alcoholic beer is “una cervesa sense alcohol”

Common toasts:

  • “Salut!” (Catalan)
  • “Salud!” (Spanish)
