El Rober de Càritas

From Guide to Girona

Girona's Rober de Càritas (Carrer Campcardós 3), is the only “rober” (clothing donation and distribution center) in Girona.[1] It provides a second-hand clothes shop that accepts donations of clothes from the public.

The rober is open Monday to Friday (10 AM to 12:30 PM and 4 to 7 PM). From Monday to Thursday, people can donate or buy clothes.[1] Fridays are reserved for the most vulnerable, around 60 people a month (mostly foreign-born), referred by social workers from places like La Sopa or the Red Cross, and they receive clothes for free.[1]

Volunteers carefully sort all donations. They unusable clothes are recycled companies such as Roba Amiga[1] and ECOSOL (Empresa de Càritas d’inserció laboral),[2]

In 20215, the rober had 14 volunteers and one paid worker. Among the volunteers was Carme, a retired teacher who joined 30 years ago; Lluís, a former bank employee managing the accounts; and Àngela, the only salaried worker, who was studying[1] to become a social educator.

A key activity is the sewing workshop (cosidor), where around 30 participants learn to repair clothes and receive a certificate at the end.[1]
