Les Fires (fairground)
Les Fires is a big fairground in La Devesa during Girona's town festival (which is confusingly also called "Les Fires"). The fair has dozens of rides, food stalls, and game booths that fill the park with flashing lights and loud music. The fair is extremely popular with families and young people, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings. The atmosphere is festive but very noisy and crowded. From every direction come sirens, music, and random beeping. The attractions can be expensive, so be careful if you bring children. You might come out with an empty wallet, with nothing more to show for it than several balloons shaped like popular cartoon characters.
Attractions at Les Fires[edit]
Rides typically cost between €4 and €6 each, and attractions range from children’s rides to roller coasters. The rides accept payment by cash or card. Many of the rides seem slightly dodgy and dangerous, and we guess that's part of the fun (?).

Attractions for children[edit]
- El Tren de la Bruixa ("the witch's train") is a small train ride for children where one of the workers is dressed as a witch or a clown and smacks riders on the head with a broom as they go round. If you manage to grab the broom from the witch, you get a free ticket to ride again. (But whether you want to ride again after being hit on the head with a broom is up to you.)
- Tren Alegria (Joy train). A small roller coaster that features brightly painted versions of well-known Disney characters, often with colours and proportions that don’t quite match the originals. We're sure that these ride owners have a licence from Disney to use Disney's beloved characters... right?
- Els toros (a mechanical bull ride)
- A multi-level funhouse called Mr Bean 4. The outside is painted with pictures of Mr Bean, the quinessential British TV character from the early 1990s. Why Mr Bean? And why Mr Bean 4? We guess there must have been versions 1, 2, 3 of the ride. What happened to them, we don't know.
Mr Bean 4 - Dragón Vacilón, a small roller coaster for young children. Every kid who rides get a balloon.
Attractions for older children and adults[edit]
- Mansion del Terror (ghost train)
- Four big rides at the back at the park:
- Latigo. Four people can sit in a car. The cars go around on a loop. When a car reaches a curve, it accelerates really fast. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZ66rDGPMpc
- Ratón Vacilón and Ala Delta are two roller coasters next to one another. You have option to get wet at the end, there's a button above the seats if you want this. On Ratón Vacilón, a big cat eats you at the end.
- Skylab is an Enterprise ride. The ride spins so centrifugal force holds you in your seat. Once at full speed, the ride tilts so you eventually travel upside-down with each revolution. There is even the option stand up inside a cage, with no seatbelt or anything.
- Dodgems
- Alcatraz, a ride where you get locked in a cage and spun around in the air
Games[edit]
- Els camells (the camels). Very popular. You roll balls into holes to make your camel move. The first camel to reach the end wins a prize.
- Pesca d'ànecs (hook a duck)
- Shooting games
- Dardos (darts) Pop three balloons with three darts and win a prize.
- Bingo
- Tombola. A guy spins a wheel and if it lands on your number, you win a prize.

Food at Les Fires[edit]
The fair has a variety of places to eat, including traditional castanyes (roasted chestnuts) sold from small stalls throughout the park. There are also numerous food trucks and stands offering typical fairground dishes such as hot dogs, chips, crepes, corn on the cob, candy floss, and jacket potatoes. In addition, several large tented restaurants serve meals like ribs, patates braves, calamari, and other casual dishes.
