Parks in Girona
La Devesa[edit]
La Devesa is a huge forest near the city centre. Spanning 40 hectares, La Devesa is the largest urban park in Catalonia.[1]
If you like trees (and who doesn't like trees? Except maybe Hexxus, the demonic smoke monster in Fern Gully?) then you will love La Devesa. Most of the park is covered by over 2,500 London Plane trees (Platanus hybrida), arranged in lines.[2] Many of them were planted in the 1850s,[3] making them over 150 years old. The trees normally grow as tall as 40 metres, but they are taller in La Devesa because they were planted close together and have had to grow upwards to seek out the sunlight.[4] Some are as tall as 55 metres, which is as tall as the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
The park also has:
- a dog park
- a cafe called La Rosaleda
- a callisthenics park
On Tuesdays and Saturdays from 9 AM to 1:30 PM there's a food and clothes market called Mercat de la Devesa.[5]

Jardins de la Devesa[edit]
In the southeastern area of La Devesa is the Jardins de la Devesa, a two-hectare English/French[6]-style garden that includes cedars, maples, magnolias, sweetgums, horse chestnuts, spruces, yews, and other species.[7] The most conspicuous tree is a tulip tree from Virginia, planted in 1876. It has a trunk circumference of 4.56 metres and an estimated height of 40 metres, the tallest of its species in southern Europe.[7]
Parc del Migdia[edit]
A big park. Has:
- a big grass area that's a nice place for a picnic or for kids to play
- a cafe called El Café del Parc del Migdia
- an artificial lake with fountains (bring bread for the ducks)
- two playgrounds
There are a couple of tall apartment buildings next to the park. They are quite expensive and a few rich people live there. One was Marc Gasol, president and founder of Basquet Girona, who owned an apartment near the top of one of the buildings.[8]
In August 2025, around twenty ducks and gulls were found dead in the lake.[9] Officials never announced the cause.
Parc Jordi Vilamitjana[edit]
A big park between Girona and Salt. Formerly called Parc dels Ponts. Compared to La Devesa or even Parc del Migdia it’s not really that big. A lot of it is just empty grass. It apparently has the second-most trees of any park in Girona, after La Devesa. There is a skate area, picnic benches, a dog park, and a children's playground with a big metal slide.
The Ajuntament wants to use the park as the site for the new Trueta hospital.[10] A local campaign called "El parc no es toca” is trying to prevent this.
There’s a weird footbridge that's pointless because its purpose is to go over a path, so why not just have a path instead? There are also creepy white crucifixes hanging around the bridge for some reason.

Parc del Vista Alegre[edit]
Parc del Vista Alegre (literally "Happy View Park" in English) has a children's playground, a basketball court / football pitch, ping pong tables, and two water fountains.
Parc del Vista Alegre was once home to Girona FC's football stadium. Originally built on former farmland, the stadium was constructed very quickly with help from players and workers.[11] Opened on 29 June 1922, Vista Alegre was Girona’s main sports stadium.[11] It became the home of Girona football, first with Unió Deportiva Girona and later Girona FC. Over the decades, it was not only used for football but also became a major sporting and cultural hub, hosting tennis, hockey, athletics, skating, and other sports.[11] After Girona FC moved to Montilivi in 1970, the stadium fell into decline, though local community and sports activities continued.[11] In 1981, the city council acquired the land and transformed it into the public urban park it is today.[11]
Jardins de les Pedreres[edit]
Jardins de les Pedreres is a nice quiet spot next to part of la Muralla (medieval city wall). It has an outdoor bar with enough chairs for around 20 people. There is also a ping pong table. It also has the back entrance to La Mercè, but this entrance is for deliveries only, and you have to round to the other side (Pujada de la Mercè, 12) to enter La Mercè.
Parc Central[edit]
A huge grassy mainly empty space next to the train station. There are two children’s playgrounds. This park is not really that great.

Els Jardins del Alemanys (German gardens) are behind the cathedral. There is an old fortress called the Torre Gironella. There are a lot of benches in El Jardins del Alemanys and they are all painted blue for some reason. There's also a small pond.
At Els Jardins del Alemanys is one of the three entrances to La Muralla.
Jardí John Lennon[edit]
The John Lennon Gardens is dedicated to John Lennon of The Beatles.[14] There's a small pond with frogs and a lookout point with excellent views of the Passeig Arqueològic and Girona Cathedral.[14] Mediterranean plants and trees fill the garden, including strawberry trees, cypresses, rosemary, lantana, and ornamental cherry trees.[14] The space is calm and and ideal for small gatherings or quiet activities.[14] The gardens are also a popular training spot for local athletes who run the stairs and ramps.
