Ajuntament[edit]

The Ajuntament (town council) is Girona's local government the mayor, councillors, and all the municipal departments (culture, mobility, social services, etc.).
The Town Hall is located at Plaça del Vi.
In 2023, a coalition of Guanyem, Junts, and Esquerra formed Girona's new government, led by mayor Lluc Salellas.
Alcalde[edit]
The alcalde (if male) or alcaldessa (if female) is the mayor of Girona. The mayor is the head of the city council and is responsible for leading the municipal government, representing the city, and coordinating the work of the councillors. The mayor is supported by vice-mayors and deputy mayors, known in Catalan as tinents d’alcaldia.

Regidors[edit]
Regidors are the city's councillors. The Ajuntament de Girona has 27 regidors in total. Each regidor/regidora is responsible for one or more specific municipal areas, such as mobility, culture, education, social services, or the environment. Each tinent d’alcaldia is also a regidor.
Some regidors have specific roles:
- Regidor/a de Promoció Econòmica i Serveis Jurídics (Councillor for Economic Promotion and Legal Services)
- Regidor/a de Cultura, Esports i Educació (Councillor for Culture, Sports and Education)
- Regidor/a de Transició Ecològica i Àrea Urbana (Councillor for Ecological Transition and Urban Area)
- Regidor/a de Talent, Innovació, Salut i Comunitat (Councillor for Talent, Innovation, Health and Community)
- Regidor/a de Gestió de Recursos i Atenció a la Ciutadania (Councillor for Resource Management and Citizen Services)
- Regidor/a de Convivència i Seguretat (Councillor for Community Relations and Public Safety)
- Regidor/a de Servei a les Persones i Convivència (Councillor for People Services and Community Relations)
- Regidor/a de Llengua Catalana (Councillor for the Catalan Language)
- Regidor/a d’Igualtat i Justícia Social (Councillor for Equality and Social Justice)
- Regidor/a de Cooperació (Councillor for Cooperation) (sometimes: International Cooperation, depending on context)
- Regidor/a d’Educació (Councillor for Education)
- Regidor/a de Participació i Atenció a la Ciutadania (Councillor for Participation and Citizen Services)

Sessions plenàries[edit]
The sessions plenàries, or just sessions del Ple or el Ple, are monthly meetings which the mayor, vice-mayor, and all the councillors attend. These meetings are usually held monthly and take place in the Sala de Plens at the Ajuntament building at Plaça del Vi.
There are two types of Ple:
- Ple ordinari – the regular, scheduled monthly meeting
- Ple extraordinari – a meeting held outside the normal schedule, usually to deal with specific or urgent matters

Political groups in Girona[edit]
- PSC - Catalan version of the Spanish group PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party). Do not want independence. Left wing. Got the most votes in the 2023 but three other parties formed a coalition and became the new Ajuntament instead. http://girona.socialistes.cat

- Allianca is an extreme right-wing Catalan party. They want Catalonia's independence. They are against immigration.
- Moviment Gironí was founded in 2025 and is led by Marc Puigtió, the former mayor of Sant Julià de Ramis. It is a left-wing party. Unlike most political groups that operate across Spain or Catalonia, Moviment Gironí focuses exclusively on Girona.
Other groups in Girona[edit]
- Arran is a pro-independence leftist youth organization in Catalonia.[1][2] (Instagram: @arran_jovent) The Girona branch is called Arran Girona. In their Instagram bio, Arran Girona describe themselves as "l'assemblea d’@arran_jovent a Girona, som les joves revolucionàries del territori." ("We are the Arran Jovent assembly in Girona — the young revolutionaries of this land.)
