School system overview[edit]

Schools in Spain fall into three categories:

  • Public schools – free and funded by the government
  • Concertada schools – semi-private, partly funded by the government (families pay a modest fee)
  • Private schools – fully funded by families (higher fees)

Languages[edit]

Public and concertada schools in Girona teach mainly in Catalan. Spanish and English are taught as foreign languages.

For other languages:

  • Sant George's School is an English private school (primary and secondary).
  • Montjuïc Girona International School is a private school (primary and secondary) that teaches in Spanish, Catalan, English, and French.

Nurseries and schools in Girona mostly speak Catalan but children under 7 pick up languages quickly just by being around them. Immersion helps them learn fast and they usually start speaking and understanding Catalan within six months. You don’t need a bilingual or English-speaking nursery.

School hours[edit]

Most schools run from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with a long lunch break (usually 12:30–3:00 PM).

Schools offer dining services (menjador). Kids can also go home for lunch.

Optional after-school activities (extraescolars) are common and help fill gaps until 6 PM.

School is mandatory between the ages of 6 and 16.

  • Primary education is from ages 6 to 12
  • Secondary education (ESO, or Educació Secundària Obligatòria) is from ages 12 to 16

After-school activities[edit]

  • Innova’t is a robotics place for kids. If you are looking for science and engineering for kids, this is the closest you will get.
  • Codelearn is a coding school for children where they learn programming through games. There are several Codelearn centres across Spain, and the one in Girona is called Codelearn Girona. https://codelearn.es

Also, every school has its own program of extracurricular activities. These programs can change from year to year depending on demand.
