Things in Girona that don't exist anymore

From Guide to Girona

Businesses that don't exist anymore[edit]

  • Llibreria Geli was one of the oldest bookshops in Catalonia.[1] Named after its owner, Francisco Geli. [2] It closed on 31 May 2022, after 143 years of history.[3] An Instagram post on 16 September 2022 says it became part of the 22 group (Lliberia 22, Espai 22). Carrer Argenteria, 18.
  • Zeppelin was a well known toy shop at Carrer de la Premsa, 2. In February 2026 the location became a foot clinic instead.
  • The was an Abacus at 42-44 Avenue Barcelona, but it closed either in 2023 or 2024.[4]
  • Copistería Ciutadans was the only copy shop in the Barri Vell. It was closed in 2025 when the owner, Glòria Campistol, retired. It had been open for 30 years. See https://www.diaridegirona.cat/girona/2025/08/01/tanca-lunica-copisteria-barri-vell-120266408.html

  • El Pati del Rabí was a bar at Carrer de la Força, 20. It opened on 7 March 2020,[5] just a week before COVID lockdowns started. Actually https://www.timeout.com/girona/bars-and-pubs/el-pati-del-rabi is an article about the bar but it's from 2016. Hmm. On 21 Oct 2022 there was a Girona International meetup there.[6]
  • El Portal del Col·leccionista was a shop on Carrer de la Força that closed in 2021. It was dedicated to collecting, and sold things like books.[7]
  • Fruiteria Ideal was a fruit shop that closed in 2025
  • Mimiraki was an indoor wooden play area in the Montessori style for children under the age of three. €6 entry fee.[8] It closed in early 2026. https://mimerakigirona.com. Carrer de Pau Vila i Dinarès, 4, 17003 Girona

Cinemas that don't exist anymore[edit]

  • Teatro Ultonia was a cinema that opened on 29 October 1945 and closed in 2000. It was part of the early developments of the Agustí family’s cinema business, which later became the OCINE chain. When it opened, it was had about 1,400 seats, making it one of the biggest cinemas in the region.
  • The Agustí family also opened Cine Oriente on 31 October 1944 on Carrer de la Rutlla at the corner with Emili Grahit.[9] In 1968, it became Girona's first art-house cinema.[9]
  • Cinemes Albanez Plaça in 2025
Cinemes Albèniz is a permanently closed cinema in Girona near the bookshop Lliberia 22. Once busy, now silent. The doors are locked, but behind the glass, you can still see faded posters for Black Widow and No Time to Die from 2021.

Language meetups that don't exist anymore[edit]

  • Conversa Catala Girona
Conversa Catala Girona was a free Catalan conversation group in Girona created by Marc Sicart (@siquii), a local Catalan teacher. The first meetup was on 26 September 2023[10]. They met on Thursday evenings at La Taverna, later changing to Saturday evenings. The group was free and open to anyone who wanted to practice Catalan. The last meetup was 8 May 2025; the group ended because of low participation and because Marc moved away from Girona.[11] Instagram: | @conversa_catala_girona
  • Girona International very occasionally organise language exchange events. In 2022, they did a "Meet-Up + Language Exchange" where they used different areas around a bar called El Pati del Rabí to form different language groups.[12] At one point in 2025, Alexey ran a language exchange every other Thursday at 7 pm at River Girona (Carrer de la Barca 2). You received a name sticker, but instead of putting your name, you had to write the languages you speak. Then the idea is that you walk around and find someone who speaks the language that you want to practice. It's been reported that it can feel intimidating because people tend to cluster into their own little groups, and it's hard for someone who's by themselves to break into them.[13] If Girona International ever run another language exchange event, they will post the details at https://www.instagram.com/girona_international. See Making friends in Girona for more info about Girona International.
  • There used to be a similar language exchange event run by the Banc del Temps at Centre Civic Santa Eugenia.
  • Up Idiomes used to organise an English conversation meetup (and maybe a Spanish conversation meetup?). They started running it in one of the classrooms in the school, but then moved to a cafe where Eat Sleep Cycle is now. This was about 2020, before Eat Sleep Cycle existed. Some days 0 people would come, but some days 25 would come. There was one day when they had every table on the terrace outside the cafe. They tried different ways of running it, like one day they did it like speed dating, where everyone was sitting 1 on 1, and then after a few minutes they all switched partners. Then they fizzled out. Andrew (who runs Up Idiomes) says the first organiser was friendly but the second organiser not so much, so he thinks the organiser was the problem.[14]
  • Up! Idiomes seemed to have a Catalan group meetup for 5 euros per session, see https://www.upidiomes.cat/qu%C3%A8/classes-de-conversa-en-grup

Social groups that don't exist anymore[edit]

Restaurants that don't exist anymore[edit]

  • Maguey was a Mexican restaurant in the Barri Vell that shut down in June 2025.[15] Probably the best Mexican restaurant in Girona, but a little pricey.[16] Carrer de la Cort Reial, 1
  • Gyros, Girona's only Greek restaurant, closed in 2025. Ronda Ferran Puig, 27-15.
  • Vadevins was a casual wine and tapas restaurant in Barri Vell @vadevinsgirona

Events that don't exist anymore[edit]

  • Parc Infantil de Nadal (PIN) was an annual children's park at Palau Firal.[17] It was a public event run by the Ajuntament every Christmas. It was different to Lleuresport, which is run by GEIEG, not the Ajuntament.
  • Just for Flowers was a 24-hour short film competition held in Girona in May 2016 and again in May 2017. It was organised by TV3 reporter Ester Bertran Ferrer and David Batlle. The name Just for Flowers was inspired by the Canadian Just for Laughs comedy festival and TV series (Ester visited Montreal two years earlier) while “Flowers” referred to Girona’s Temps de Flors festival, which took place at the same time as Just for Flowers. Each film had to include an object provided by the organisers, a joke or hidden-camera scene, and a Temps de Flors location assigned by the organisers.[18] Prizes included €500 for first place, €200 for second, €100 for third, and additional awards for best script, best acting, and audience favourite.[18] See https://www.facebook.com/justforflowers
  • The Milestone Project was a street art festival than ran from 2012 to 2019. See Milestone_Project
  • The SOS project (Subjecte d’Obsolescència Silent project, or Subject of Silent Obsolescence project) was a one-off community art initiative in 2024 created by the association Art-Crea and artist Raquel Morón. It was a sound walk through Girona’s Barri Vell to denounce the gentrification process taking place in this part of the city.[19] Wearing a pair of headphones, participants walked the streets and listened to the testimonies of residents who have to leave the area because of rising housing and business costs.[19]
  • Trunk or Treat was an annual Halloween event organised by Mary Lynn Parnell in the Girona Mamas and Papas Facebook group. Parents decorated the trunks of their cars in Halloween-themed decor and passed out candy or other goodies to the children that came. Marylynn held the first one in 2012, 2013, and 2014, but no photos exist of these. Then there was a break of a few years. Then she held the fourth and fifth in the parking lot of Mercadona (41.991421, 2.819883), the sixth was held in a spot just outside of Girona (41°57'06.8"N 2°49'01.4"E). The fifth and sixth iterations had around 30-50 kids. 2021 2022 2023
  • Game Night was an open board games and card games event for adults in Girona, organised by Mary Lynn Parnell. There was also a version called Family Game Night for parents and their children.[20]Link

Other things that don't exist anymore[edit]

  • GiroNat was an environmental urban-regeneration project in Girona, Spain, running from 2022 to December 2025.[21][22] The initiative aimed to make the city greener, healthier, and more resilient by restoring and integrating natural elements into urban spaces.[23] The project had a total budget of €3,043,331,[21] of which 95% was funded by the European Union through the NextGenerationEU recovery plan.[24]
  • Club Bàsquet Sant Josep was a basketball team in Girona from 1962 to 2013. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CB_Sant_Josep
  • The Devesa gardens once had peacocks strutting around freely.[25] At some point, the council starting keeping the peacocks in a cage in La Devesa. In May 2007, unknown persons forced open the cage and released the two peacocks (a male and a female); graffiti with slogans favouring animals and an anarchist symbol were found nearby. The birds were never found, and the council debated whether to replace them.[26] After this escape, the city reintroduced peacocks in 2014. Following petitions by the vegan association ¿Serás su voz?, which complained that the cage was too small and gathered signatures to free the birds, the council launched a pilot project in February 2017 to let the four peacocks roam the gardens again under supervision. During this trial they wandered among the bushes and in the trees and were returned to the cage at night; councillor Narcís Sastre said that if the project did not work the peacocks could be sent to the Gaia sanctuary in Camprodon.[27] In February 2021, the city council decided to demolish the cage and relocate the birds to a farmhouse, confirming they would not return to the park, due to controversies about animal welfare.[28]
  • Apparently, the Devesa also had monkeys. According to Josep Antoni Triviño in an article for Diari de Girona, the monkeys would watch the children playing on the swings and look for crumbs from picnic snacks, while the peacocks strutted around.[29]
