Tapas are small servings of food in bars throughout Spain. Typical tapas include olives, bread, Spanish ham, and pickled fish. The word "tapas" comes from the Spanish verb tapar, meaning "to cover". The most common theory suggests that in the 19th century, people in Spain would place a slice of bread or ham on their wine to prevent dust and insects from getting into their drinks.
