The public healthcare system

The public health service in Catalonia is called CatSalut. Services are generally free or low-cost if you have a health card (tarjeta sanitaria).

How to access public healthcare in Catalonia

The Targeta Sanitària Individual (TSI) (personal health card)

To get free healthcare in Girona, you need have a Targeta Sanitària Individual (TSI) (personal health card). To get a TSI, you need to meet all three of these conditions:

  1. You have an empadronamiento
  2. You have a NIE or DNI.
  3. You are either:
    • Working or self-employed and paying into Social Security.
    • Receiving a state pension or unemployment benefit.
    • A dependent family member of someone who is covered.
    • A child or minor living in Catalonia.
    • An asylum seeker or in a vulnerable situation (special process).

You can apply for the TSI:

What you need to apply:

  • NIE or DNI
  • Certificate of empadronament (padró)
  • Social Security number (if working)
  • Sometimes a SIP card from another region (if you moved from another part of Spain)
  • Passport (in some cases, for identity)

Once you have the TSI, you can

  • Register with your local CAP (Centre d'Atenció Primària).
  • Book doctor’s appointments online or via the La Meva Salut app.
  • Access free or subsidised public health services.

If you are undocumented or in a vulnerable situation, you can still request access to healthcare. Go to your CAP and explain your situation. They will guide you.

EU citizens with an EHIC can use public health services temporarily.

Centros de Atención Primaria (CAPs)

Public health centres are called Centros de Atención Primaria (CAPs), A CAP is the first place to go when you have a health problem.[1]
