Girona Buddies is a WhatsApp community based in Girona. It is the largest social group in Girona, with almost 2,000 members in their WhatsApp community. It is open to anyone to join. It is known for its many (many) subgroups, including languages, hiking, food, selling and freecycling, cycling, AI, neurodivergence, and yoga. Members are encouraged to organise their own events and create their own subgroups.

Diversity is encouraged, and people of all ages, backgrounds, and nationalities are welcome. Language diversity is also valued, and members are free to use any language they like in the WhatsApp community.

Everything is organised in the WhatsApp community, which is a relatively new feature of WhatsApp, being released only two years before the creation of Girona Buddies. Other WhatsApp communities exist around the world, but Girona Buddies is probably the best run. :)

Girona Buddies meetups[edit]

Girona Buddies history[edit]

Girona Buddies started in February 2024, when Denise Pilat, a newcomer to Girona from Germany, posted in the Facebook group Girona Costa Brava Expats International: "Hello, you! If you're looking for friends and want to go out for a coffee, send me your phone number, and I'll make a WhatsApp group." Several people joined. The WhatsApp group, initially called Costa Brava Buddys, had about 50 members after three days. The first meetup was a picnic in Parc del Migdia. About fifteen people came. They were from diverse countries, including Germany, England, Peru, Italy, Croatia, Russia, and Spain.

The group was extremely active that spring, especially in April, when almost 1,000 messages were sent within the group. Denise organized many of the group's activities over the spring and summer, like yoga sessions, hikes, and brunches.

By July, interest in the group was dwindling, and by August, the group was virtually dead. In October, Denise left Girona and passed on admin responsibilities to one of the other members, Paul, who has been running the group since. Since then, the group has expanded from a WhatsApp group to a WhatsApp community, and now has subgroups focused on activities like hiking, language exchange, music, crafts, and mental health support. Paul also created an Instagram account, a Facebook group, and a Meetup account for Girona Buddies.

The Girona Buddies WhatsApp community reached 1,000 members on 24 July 2025 and 2,000 members on 8 February 2026.

Girona Buddies mascot[edit]

The Girona Buddies mascot is a Petooties sloth. "I have a friend called Maria and she has an Instagram account called nikitas_traveler, where it's photos of a toy monkey around the world," Paul explains. "I thought I could do the same idea for Girona Buddies. So I was looking through my sons' stuffed toy collection looking for a toy I could use a mascot, and the two cutest toys I could find were the sloth and a tiger. I asked Maria and she preferred the sloth, so I went with the sloth." Paul named the sloth 'Meek', "because Meek sounds like 'amic' which means 'friend' in Catalan".

The Girona Buddies logo includes Meek's head and was created by designer Lluis Tarrida.

Girona International is a social group primarily for young foreigners in Girona. It’s especially popular with Erasmus students, but events are open to everyone.

The organiser is a Russian man called Alexey Danilin. Their Facebook group has three other people as admins: Arina Elabuzheva, Laia OJ, and Miguel Cstlln.

💡 Note: Girona International is different from the Girona International Society.

Karaoke[edit]

Their main meetup (and often their only meetup) is a karaoke night every second Friday at Duplex Bar. The stated start time is 9:30 PM but they actually start more around 10 PM.[1] It often draws 30+ people. Some say the karaoke events skew a bit young and party-focused, but it depends on what you’re looking for. You need to write the song you want to sing fast, because if you wait too long, you'll be far down on the list, which means a long wait before you can sing.[2]

Girona International history[edit]

  • The group appears to date back to 2021, with early meetups like a picnic in Parc del Migdia.[3]
  • In 2022, gatherings were held at Cua de Gall[4] and then El Pati del Rabí[5]
  • In early 2023, events shifted to Kerunta Bar, where a karaoke photo from 26th March 2023 is now their Facebook profile picture.[6]
  • On 17th November 2023, they moved to Duplex Bar (Ronda Ferran Puig, 39).[7]

Girona Conecta is a project founded by Russian social marketer Nastya Elikan. The project is known for its Get Togethers, a free fortnightly social event in Girona attracting up to 50 people.

History of Girona Conecta[edit]

Nastya arrived in Catalunya in 2014 and moved to Girona in 2020.[9] She created the Girona Conecta Meetup.com group in early 2023, where the first event was a free pass day at Coespai coworking, which coincidentally Paul (who would later lead Girona Buddies) attended and got stuck in a lift.

The first Get Together was held in October 2023 at the rooftop terrace of Hotel Ultonia and was an instant success, attracting at least 20 people.[10] After that, Nastya organised the next Get Togethers at other bars, until settling on Hors Catégorie Girona as a more or less permanent location. Interest quickly grew in the meetups, leading Nastya to use Eventbrite to manage RSVPs and avoid overcrowding. In January 2025, Nastya held the 20th Get Together, at Hors Catégorie. Also in this month, the Diari de Girona published an article about the meetups.

Girona Conecta Get Togethers[edit]

Girona Conecta is best known for a recurring event called Girona Conecta Get Together, where anyone is welcome to come socialise. Nastya runs the meetups once a fortnight, generally on a Thursday or a Friday from 6:30-9:30 PM. She held the first Get Together on 19 October 2023[11].

Meetups have been hosted at various locations around Girona, including:

  • Hors Catégorie
  • The terrace of Hotel Ultònia
  • La Garrina
  • Selva bar & restaurant
  • La Malabarista
  • River Café
  • Passeig Arqueològic gardens (as part of Tempo Festival)

The meetups typically attract 20 to 30 participants, although some editions have seen as many as 50. Attendees range in age from their 20s to their 60s, and come from all over the world – including the USA, Mexico, Belgium, Australia, France, Ukraine, Argentina, the UK, and of course, Girona and Catalunya.

When participants arrive, they write their name on a sticker and are free to mingle, chat, and form spontaneous conversation circles.
